MPG Update! Flash Drive: 2022 Ford Maverick

They Could Have Called It “The Phoenix”

Ford Maverick MPG
Ford Maverick real world MPG

UPDATE: When this story originally posted on October 6, 2021, Ford had not received the final fuel economy rating from the EPA for the base 2022 Maverick with the hybrid powertrain. The numbers are out now, and they are stellar–42 mpg in the city (42 mpg city, 33 highway, 37 combined). In a 33.3 mile test run in the Maverick Hybrid, I achieved an overall rating of 45.4 mpg, which included 12.8 miles running solely on electricity. That is the key to why the Maverick Hybrid will be such a game changer for Ford. Consumers will see the economy, versatility and base price under $20,000 (excluding destination fee of $1,495) as a reason to consider the Maverick Hybrid compact pickup over a compact or midsize crossover, or a sedan. Ford has a goal of selling the Maverick to people that have never owned a truck. This news from the EPA must be making them smile!

Ford has a winner on their hands with the all-new 2022 Ford Maverick compact pickup.

2022 Ford Maverick

An overachieving small pickup

Maybe Ford went with Maverick because it can mean “pursuing rebellious, even potentially disruptive, policies or ideas.” This, without question, is what the Maverick will do. However, Ford also could have called it Phoenix, as in “to rise from its ashes in the freshness of youth and live through another cycle of time.” Ford has certainly done this by resurrecting the compact pickup genre that was once so popular in the 1960s-1980s.

So who does Ford think will buy the all-new 2022 Maverick? According to the Ford marketing team we spoke with at a recent media launch event, their target buyer will be young, female, Hispanic, and urban, including a full hybrid model that may get up to 40 mpg (it hasn’t been certified by the EPA at press time). This may be so, but after driving a few different configurations, they may be surprised this will not be who ends-up buying the Maverick. Regardless who’s driveway it ends up in, Ford has a winner.

Like most pickups, the Maverick will come in a variety of trims with different equipment. Here’s a run-down of the lineup:

Hitting the Road

In this Flash Drive review we will only scratch the surface on both the hybrid-electric and gasoline-powered Maverick, with a full Road Test review coming along in early 2022. The hybrids we drove were all front-wheel drive, while the gasoline-only Mavericks were all-wheel drive. The power plants in the Maverick are proven through their use on other Ford vehicles, which lends confidence when buying a first year model.

The 2022 Maverick hybrid is quiet in electric mode, with only minimal sound when the engine kicks-in under heavy acceleration. The hybrid has all the get-up-and go that electricity adds to a drivetrain, with the CVT handling all expected performance needs. The 2.0L turbocharged Maverick has more horsepower and torque, along with all-wheel drive.

The cargo payload of 1,500 pounds is the same on all Mavericks, regardless of the engine. The tow rating for the Maverick hybrid is 2,000 pounds, while the gasoline engine goes up to 4,000 pounds. I towed a trailer weighing 1,600 pounds with the front-wheel drive hybrid, and needed to keep looking in the mirror to make sure it was there. The drive was very smooth. With the hybrid power, pulling onto highway onramps and climbing grades was easy.

2022 Ford Maverick

Got wood?

I then drove the Maverick with the all-wheel drive 2.0L turbo and 500 pounds of plywood in the bed. The 4’ X 8’ sheets extended past the dropped tailgate by less than a foot, which was just fine for short distances. Ford has cleverly designed some helpful features that make the short, four-foot bed very livable. The Maverick was not intended to be a heavy-duty work truck, but more for the weekend warrior home owner doing DIY projects, or used for active lifestyles such as biking and kayaking. For these purposes, it is a viable option to a larger truck or a compact crossover.

The Maverick, weighing-in between 3,674 and 3,731 pounds, felt stable on the road, with cornering producing little body lean unless really pushing it hard. The 17-inch or 18-inch tires performed well, and stopping with either the trailer or a loaded payload was predictable and controllable. The Maverick has four-wheel disc brakes with ABS; the hybrid adds regenerative braking that converts kinetic energy into electricity when braking or coasting.

The electric-power steering was tuned well for road feel. There never was time or situation where we felt disconnected from the tires and the road, and that included the short off-road track we drove a few times. We did not get the chance to drive either Maverick in the rain, but our history with FWD cars is they track well in the wet, with all-wheel drive delivering even more traction.

Interior

2022 Ford Maverick

Best seats are up front

The 2022 Maverick comes in three trim levels–XL, XLT and Lariat. The base Maverick XL has a MSRP of $19,995 and comes equipped with power windows, carpet, single zone manual air conditioning, two 12V and two USB ports with one each of Type A and C, an 8.0-inch screen with Bluetooth, Apple Car Play and Android Auto to utilize the AM/FM stereo and its six speakers. FordPass Connect offers convenience features such as remote door lock/unlock, remote keyless entry and remote engine start. The 4G LTE WI-Fi hotspot can accommodate up-to 10 devices over a range of 50 feet.

The seats are comfortable, but the rears are tight for taller passengers. There is rear under-seat storage, but make sure to check out the clever design they came up with on the front doors to accommodate a large drink bottle or cup.

Move up to the XLT, which Ford thinks will be the volume trim level or the Lariat, and the list of standard and available convenience and technology features and safety systems increase to where the Maverick, with a top price estimated at $38,000, will be as fully equipped and nicely appointed as any Ford truck.

Using the Flexible Unibody Architecture that utilizes unique modules, different vehicles can be built on the same manufacturing line with different wheelbases, ride heights and track widths. Sharing its platform with the Bronco Sport and Escape crossovers gave Ford interior designers the opportunity to make the Maverick cabin comfortable, and with excellent rear and side visibility. There are two child safety anchors in the outer rear seat positions, making the Maverick a serious consideration for a small family.

Exterior

2022 Ford Maverick

Not standing tall

Ford says the Maverick is “Built Ford Tough,” which of course has been the Ford credo for the F-Series and Ranger for many years. The tough part for a compact pickup could be hard to quantify, but after pulling a trailer, hauling a bed-full of lumber, and negotiating an off-road course, the Maverick has earned its tough stripes.

The first thing you will notice about the Maverick is its 68.7-inch height, which is just over five-foot seven inches. I stand five foot nine and it was odd being able to look over the cab of a pickup. But this lack of bigness is what will make the Maverick so appealing, as it will fit in a garage, six footers can easily sit in the front seats, and a big plus is being able to reach over the cargo box sides and touch the bed floor. If you have ever needed to off-load or tie-down anything on a midsize or full-size pickup, you will know what a great feature this is.

The box itself has some handy features, such as being able to position the tailgate flat or at an angle, tie-downs, slots to drop-in a 2×4 to raise the floor above the wheel wells, and lights. On the base XL there is no power in the bed, so stepping-up to the XLT and Lariat means there will be the opportunity to run generators, lights and other equipment.

2022 Ford Maverick

A gathering of Mavericks

Observations: 2022 Ford Maverick

Starting at $19,995, the Maverick XL is a bargain proposition . The hybrid engine powertrain (borrowed from Ford’s Escape) with great fuel economy will be popular with people needing a small pickup for around-town errands, for hauling up-to 2,000 pounds, and being able to toss a couple of bikes or a kayak in the bed, all while not worrying about damaging an expensive truck.

2022 Ford Maverick

Ready to pull its weight

For more comfort and conveniences, go for the XLT and Lariat because even at an estimated $38,410 top-end price, the Maverick is a great all-around alternative to a crossover or even a larger truck.

So back to who Ford thinks will be buying the Maverick. Not saying they are wrong with their target, but the Maverick can easily slot into a role as a light-duty delivery vehicle, for ranchers or farmers needing an inexpensive runabout, for surfers and skiers loving the kick-about nature of the base XL, and for more sophisticated users looking to replace a sedan or SUV that has just outstayed its welcome and usefulness.

In an upcoming Road Test of the 2022 Maverick, Clean Fleet Report will dive deep into the technology, driver safety systems, as well as more details on the performance and drivability. We will also report on real-world fuel economy and of course how that stacks up against the official numbers when they’re released.

Until then, you can visit a Ford dealer and take a lengthy test-drive in the gasoline-powered Maverick. The Maverick hybrid will be coming along by the end of the year. You need to check-out this new truck which Ford is hoping will be as successful as the compact pickups from a few decades ago. Sort of a Back to The Future thing!

Make sure to opt-in to the Clean Fleet Report newsletter (top right of page) to be notified of all new stories and vehicle reviews.

What Makes the Jaguar F-Type R-Dynamic Black So Inspiring?

An absence of color will clear your mind

Henry Ford told customers they could have any color they liked, so long as it was black. Everyone should own a black car with a mile-deep finish at some point, because when polished to a mirror shine, it reflects the world the driver chooses to encounter. Jaguar has been listening to our advice, so we want to know what makes the F-Type R-Dynamic so inspiring.

FYI: Jaguar will offer the Dynamic Black in other colors….

This new special edition arrives loaded with Windsor Leather, unique wheels, and an ebony suede headliner. What’s more, it can be had in both coupe and convertible, rear or AWD, with 4, 6, and 8-cylinder power. I would choose a drop-top, supercharged v8 (450 horsepower) with AWD, because….why not? This new spec is just one of a million ways you could order your F-Type, so click the button below to learn more from our dealers.

Bugatti Celebrates 300th Chirons & Counting

A major milestone for the masters in Molsheim

To everyone that said it couldn’t be done, Bugatti is celebrating 300 Chirons and counting. This sparkling new machine is a Chiron Pur Sport finished in Nocturne. Accents of gray carbon and gunmetal make it unique among this limited run of 60 cars.

Each Chiron Pur Sport carries a base price of 3 million euros or roughly 3.5 million dollars before any customization. For that, you will have 1,500 horsepower and 1,180 lb-ft of torque along with suspension tuned for the track. Trading off a bit of top speed for acceleration, the gear ratios are 15% closer to keep all four turbos happy. What this equates to is reaching 62 mph in 2.3 seconds, 135 mph in 5.5 seconds, and you will be at 186 mph in 12 seconds flat.

It is hard to believe the Chiron is now middle-aged. The manufacturer has repeatedly affirmed that it will be their model without electrification, so perhaps that’s one reason our dealers are staying busy. To see what separates the Chiron from lesser cars, click the button below.

Top 10 Fastest Cars in the World – Top Speeds

1) SSC Tuatara 331 Miles Per Hour (Official)

As the successor to their Ultimate Aero, Jerod Shelby (not related to Carroll) and his team needed more power. Knowing that a flat-plane V8 would easily rev to 9,000 rpm, they commissioned Nelson Racing Engines to build a 5.9-liter V8 by hand. Using Nelson’s patented Mirror-Image turbos, this American hypercar sends 1,750 horsepower and 1,280 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. This allowed them to reach a top speed of 331 mph for an official 2-way average of 316.11 mph.

2) Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+ 304 miles per hour (unofficial)

The Bugatti Chiron Super Sport recently gained a crown as the fastest car in the world. Working with Dallara to optimize the aerodynamics, the latest Bugatti Chiron was clocked at 304.773 miles per hour at the Volkswagen proving grounds near Wolfsburg, Germany in August of 2019. It was a one-way run due to the track surface so ineligible for a world record.

3) Koenigsegg Agera RS- 277.87 Miles Per Hour (official)

On a closed Nevada highway, Christian von Koenigsegg and company pushed their car into the history books. Their 2-way average of 277.87 spurred the innovation to design the Jesko for over 300 mph.

4) Hennessey Venom GT — 270.49 Miles Per Hour (official)

All too happy to see the Veyron fall, Texas-based-tuner-turned-manufacturer Hennessey says it Venom GT, based heavily on the Lotus Exige, is the new speed king, reaching 265.7 miles per hour in two miles, two fewer miles compared to the Veyron’s top-speed run. It accomplished this feat on February 9, 2013, at the Naval Air Station Lemoore in Lemoore, California, and it has a video to prove it. With Hennessey claiming its Venom GT produces 1,244 horsepower and weighs only 2,743 pounds, we have no reason to believe it isn’t true.

5) Bugatti Chiron — 261 Miles Per Hour

The Bugatti Chiron comes in as the Veyron’s successor and ultimately outruns it when it comes to top speed. That’s all thanks to the 1,479 horsepower that the massive 8-liter W16 engine pumps out.

2012-Bugatti-Veyron-Grand-Sport-Vitesse-Black-and-Red-Front-Angle

6) Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse — 254.0 Miles Per Hour (official)

With the Veyron coupe no longer in production and officially dethroned by Guinness, Bugatti released the Super Sport’s open-top twin on the Ehra-Lessien test track with Chinese racecar driver Anthony Liu at the wheel. Together, they were able to set a new world record for a roadster of 254.0 miles per hour.

bugatti-veyron-16-4-2006-2

7) Bugatti Veyron 16.4 — 253.8 Miles Per Hour (unofficial)

Bugatti set the whole world into a top-speed tizzy when it claimed that it averaged 253.8 miles per hour on April 19, 2005, with its then-new million-dollar supercar, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4. Bugatti was looking to become the world’s fastest production car, even preparing the car aerodynamically for the task with a Top Speed mode that shut a pair of diffuser flaps in the front and aligned the rear spoiler with the chassis.

koenigsegg-ccr-02

8) Koenigsegg CCR — 240.1 Miles Per Hour (official)

We know; we know. How is the 806-horsepower Koenigsegg CCR on our list when the 1,140-horsepower Koenigsegg Agera R is not? While it is true that the latter would handily outgun the former, Koenigsegg only speculates that the Agera R has a top speed of—wait for it—273 miles per hour. On the other hand, it has proved that the Koenigsegg CCR is capable of 240.1 miles per hour, taking the title from the McLaren F1 on the Nardò Ring on February 28, 2005.

9) McLaren F1 — 240.1 Miles Per Hour (official)

Jonathan Palmer reportedly drove the F1 prototype XP3 around Italy’s Nardo test track at 231 mph, the production units’ limited top speed, but on March 31, 1998, racecar driver Andy Wallace piloted the delimited McLaren prototype XP5 to an average of 240.1 miles per hour at Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessien test track. It still holds the crown for the world’s fastest production car with a naturally aspirated engine.

10) Aston Martin One-77 — 220.0 Miles Per Hour (unofficial)

Aston Martin said one of the 77 One-77s achieved a top speed of 220.0 miles per hour during testing, setting a new record for an Aston Martin car.

Visitors to the London Art Museum were greeted by a wild 2-wheeler yesterday. With graceful lines and the perfect rake, the 2021 Triumph Trident is a stunning middleweight roadster. You can definitely tell its British thanks to the minimalist nature along with classic cues. The original Triumph was a staple of late-60’s Mods & Rockers.

The second generation in the ’90s tried to revive the same emotions, but times had changed. Now the 3rd generation is taking the brand into uncharted territory. Is Porsche Taycan the Best Performance Electric Vehicle (EV) in the Market?

For many years Tesla has been dominating the performance EV market until Taycan came along which unquestionably increased the competition for all performance EVs manufacturers.

Taycan is very different to any other Porsche; it is also the fastest car Porsche has ever produced. Taycan drives effortlessly with no sound apart from the mellow sound produced by the electric motors which are engineered to put this car in motion as fast as it can; to be precise 0-60mph in just 2.6 seconds making this the one of the best performance electric vehicle(EV) currently available in the market.

Porsche Taycan EV Electric Vehicle On The Road Front End

The design DNA of Taycan is like a classic Porsche, the back side of the car is a compact version of Panamera with classic fender design snaking along the sides to the front; letting the drive know that they are in a Porsche!!!  Taycan Turbo S produces 751 horsepower and 1050N-m of torque with a cap on top speed of 162 mph. The car has a power system of 800-volt which speeds up the charging and distribute optimal power in Taycan.

Here are some specs of the Porsche Taycan:

Weight 2140kg 2220kg 2305kg 2295kg
Price $103,800 $109,370 $150,00 $185,000

Taycan is also a very safe car with some saying that it is an over-engineered EV packed with a lot of technology. Taycan scored 70% for pedestrian protection, 83% for child protection and 85% for adult protection. In addition to regular safety features other EV are equipped with these days, Taycan has enhanced night vision, rear-cross traffic alert and autonomous emergency braking system.

Porsche Taycan EV Electric Vehicle Back

Tesla its main rival has been dominant in the EV market for some years now. Tesla latest performance variant of model S can do 0-60mph only in just 2.3 sec. Tesla recorded its famous Nürburgring(Germany) track lap time in 7 minutes and 23 seconds which is 19 seconds faster than the previous scoreboard leader Taycan which recorded the lap time in 7 minutes and 42 seconds in September last year.

Taycan is Porsche’s response to the performance EV market which has without doubt increased the bar for its competition. It is not the fastest yet but unarguably one of the fastest and best-looking performance EVs you can buy today.

News: Bird Scooters Improve as They Relaunch

Micromobility Revamps in a Different Market

Bird, a leader in the electric scooter market, is relaunching in some cities with not only a strict regimen of protective cleaning, but with a new feature that makes it faster than ever to grab and use a scooter. Now, welcome Quick Start.

[embedded content]

A quick video about Quick Start

If your key stays in your pocket when you enter and start your car, you already get the hang of it. Rather than having to scan a QR code on the scooter with your phone, now you just walk near it and press the Start button that appears on your phone. Then, off you go.

“Our product, design and development teams are continually striving to innovate and push the industry forward for the benefit of our community,” said Scott Rushforth, chief vehicle officer at Bird. “Quick Start is the latest industry-first feature to emerge from this collaboration, and it’s one that we believe will deliver riders a more magical micromobility experience.”

Safety During COVID-19 Restrictions

If you’re concerned about the safety of using a shared scooter now, here are the steps Bird is taking to ensure its scooters are clean and ready to go:

  • They have set clear guidelines for deep cleaning and sanitizing the scooters
  • They thoroughly sanitize each vehicle every time they are recharged or serviced with CDC-approved disinfectant products
  • They perform regular spot cleanings in the field on surfaces such as bells, throttles and handlebars
  • Technicians use face masks, hand sanitizer, nitrile gloves, protective goggles and disinfectant sprays and wipes, and are required to wash their hands regularly and dispose of gloves after each use

Riding Longer

And riders are coming back as shelter-in-place restrictions lift. Interestingly, they are taking longer rides, too.

Bird electric scooters

Bird scooters are being used longer–and can be purchased

“Over the past month, we’ve seen sustained increases in trip duration of more than 50%,” said Ryan Fujiu, chief product officer at Bird. “We’re seeing strong indications that it may be a much longer-term trend related to things like public transit concerns, nearly a thousand miles of new open streets and a spike in the construction of protected cycling infrastructure.”

Some of those long rides may be turning into purchases as Bird has also launched a store at shop.bird.co to sell its scooters for adults and kids.

Perhaps riders are using the scooters instead of taking the bus. Or maybe people are just happy to get out of their houses again.

Skechers COO Purchases Penthouse at Turnberry Place in Las Vegas’ Largest Recent High-Rise Transaction

In what is the largest high-rise transaction during Las Vegas’ first-quarter sales, Chief Operating Officer of Skechers, David Weinberg purchased a penthouse at Turnberry Place for $3.7 million. Weinberg hails from California and paid cash for his new Las Vegas pad, which has been referred to as the Tiffany Penthouse for its high-end accouterments. The former homeowner is Mark Evenstad, founder and CEO of a large healthcare company. Jerry Masini of Award Realty represented Weinberg, while Mahsheed Barghisavar of Mahsheed Realty represented Evenstad in the sale.

According to Barghisavar, the penthouse is larger than most any other Las Vegas high-rise has to offer. “It’s almost 7,000 square feet and penthouses in other high-rises, like the Waldorf Astoria — its biggest is about 3,400 square feet,” says Barghisavar.

The home on the 33rd floor of Turnberry Place boasts 5,779 square feet, encompassing five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Notably featured is an elevator exclusive to the unit, which provides access to private wine walls, a wine-tasting cellar and a full-circle bar. Homeowners of the Tiffany Penthouse will also enjoy a private fitness room and office. Every exquisite common area of the home leads to the four wrap-around balconies, which together showcase 360-degree views of the Las Vegas Strip and the valley below.

Nothing less than top-of-the-line appliances, fixtures and finishes are displayed prominently throughout the penthouse. Walls clad in piano lacquer and floors finished in travertine tile highlight the handsome design, while Jenn-Air, Subzero, Miele and Asko appliances elevate the divine chef’s kitchen. In the master bedroom, the walls are treated with brocade fabric while coordinating draperies outfit the windows and sliding doors. A sumptuous master bath has double sinks, a makeup vanity, two water closets and an architectural tub. A hidden door provides access between the master retreat and the kitchen.

“This [home] has windows all around so you have Strip views and mountain views on the other side. It’s great for entertaining. It’s so wide open,” says Barghisavar. The home was offered fully-furnished and turn-key. Turnberry Place is ideally located just minutes from world-renowned restaurants, shopping centers and the greatest casinos in the world, according to Barghisavar, who boasts that the Tiffany Penthouse is the most elegant and luxurious in all of Las Vegas.
